Soon after her divorce, a fiction writer returns to her home in small-town Minnesota, looking to rekindle a romance with her ex-boyfriend, who is now married with kids, Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.
Directed by Canadian boy Ivan Reitman, this is a comedic drama perhaps a little “Up in the Air” Ivan’s best movie.
